Why
updatedb reads /etc/updatedb.conf at each run, and the settings there decide what the index covers. PRUNEPATHS lists directories to skip, PRUNEFS lists filesystem types to skip so that network and virtual filesystems are not walked, and PRUNENAMES lists directory names to skip anywhere in the tree. This is why locate typically knows nothing about /tmp or an NFS mount even after the database has been rebuilt, and it explains a miss that has nothing to do with the database being stale.
