Why
Plain readlink prints only the one path string stored in the link, which may itself be relative or point at a further link. -f canonicalises the whole chain, resolving every symbolic link and every . and .. component to an absolute path, and requires only that all but the last component exist. -e is the stricter variant that prints nothing unless every component exists, and -m is the permissive one that never checks. realpath performs the same canonicalisation as a standalone command.
