Why

A filesystem image held in a regular file has no block device of its own, so the kernel needs a loop device to present the file as one. The loop mount option makes mount find a free /dev/loopN and set it up automatically, which is why losetup is rarely needed by hand any more. The filesystem type may be left out because mount probes it (iso9660 here), and an ISO is mounted read-only whether or not ro is given.
