Why
LVM stacks three objects: physical volumes are initialised on partitions or whole disks with pvcreate, one or more of them are pooled into a volume group with vgcreate, and logical volumes are carved out of that pool with lvcreate. Only the logical volume receives a filesystem and a mount point. The extend counterparts follow the same naming, so vgextend adds a physical volume to an existing group and lvextend grows a logical volume.
