Why
crontab -e copies the user's crontab to a temporary file, runs the editor named by VISUAL or EDITOR on it, then checks the syntax and installs the result. Editing the spool file under /var/spool/cron directly is unsupported, because the daemon relies on crontab to validate the file and to signal that the spool has changed. The related options are -l to print the crontab, -r to delete it and -u to select another user's crontab as root.
